In response to recent ransomware attacks that significantly impacted county operations, Winona County has intensified its cybersecurity efforts. The most recent incident, occurring in early April 2026, led to the temporary shutdown of certain county services to prevent further damage.
County officials have collaborated with the Minnesota National Guard, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and other state and federal agencies to address the breaches and bolster the county’s digital defenses. Emergency Management Director Ben Klinger emphasized the complexity of these cyberattacks and the commitment of all involved parties to restore and secure the county’s systems.
As part of the recovery process, the county is implementing phased restoration of services, ensuring each system’s security before bringing it back online. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official county communications and to report any suspicious digital activities to local authorities.
